What You Need To Know Before Ordering Your Door Hardware

It’s always exciting to have a new DIY project in your home. Nothing feels better than seeing something you like and making it yours!

 

 

We know sometimes, it’s not as easy as it sounds, there could be more details required than meets the eye, and that is why we are putting together a guide just for you!

 

  1. Some hardware terms to be familiar with:
  • Tubular Latch: It is the mechanism that goes into the door that allows the door to be opened and closed by means of a Door Handle or Door Knob.
  • Faceplate: It is the metal plate on the edge of the door frame, attached to the latch. Its function is to protect the lock from being worn out due to repetitive use. We provide a standard square faceplate in the same finish as the product.
  • Strike: It is the metal plate on the frame side that latches the door. We provide a standard D-strike in the same finish as the product.
  • Rose Or Backplate: It is the piece that installs onto the door and holds the lever at the same time. It comes in different shapes, such a square or round. At EH the standard size of the Rose is 60MM or 2 3/8” diameter.

 

  • The backset: Is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the 2-1/8-inch bore hole*. Two common backsets are the most popular for residential door locks,  2 3/8 inches (60MM) and 2 3/4 inches (70MM). You will need to measure the backset before ordering.
  • Borehole: Is the large center hole where the lever is mounted into. The standard sized bore hole is 2 1/8" in diameter. 

  1. Get to know the measurements that will make all the difference

In most cases, doors are prepped following these measurements as they tend to be standard sizes. If your door fits the bill, then you’re all set to head to our product page and chose the door hardware you love the most! 

So before heading to the check out, make sure you have the right door function, backset and door preparation. Luckily we have that chart on each lever in our collection, to serve as a reminder ;)

 

  1. Passage, Privacy and the dummies!
  • Passage lever sets are the door levers that are used in places where doors do not require a lock such as offices, hallways etc. In the box you will find two levers, the latch with a faceplate and the strike.

  • Privacy lever sets are the door levers that are used in places where doors require a lock, such as bathrooms, master bedrooms and offices. The privacy set assembles and installs like a passage set but you also have a privacy pin on the rose/plate. From the exterior side the door handle is rigid when locked, but from the inside it is always free flowing. In the box you will find two levers, the latch with a privacy pin with a faceplate and a strike.

  • Dummy lever sets, although it’s not a “for dummies” series, but still very important to learn! There is no need to measure backsets as they do not have a latch! They are used for aesthetic reasons, and trust us when we say, they do make a huge difference!
    • You can go for a single dummy, if one side of the door is showing and you do not have a 2 1/8” bore hole. This is mainly used for closets:

 

  1. What’s the difference between a lever and a door knob?

Lever handles provide much more grip than door knobs. If you have people in your home who do not have much grip, such as children and the elderly a door knob may make it difficult to operate. This is very relevant in public use buildings where it is always advised to use lever handles over door knobs. When it comes to your own home, we always recommend going with the most aesthetically pleasing design that works for you!
